I have had the great privilege to assist in the interior design of one of Oregon's great new modern homes. Found along the scenic McKenzie River, this modern marvel is owned by Joy and Doug Watson. Joy's prior home was filled with antiques and collectibles, and her goal in building a dream home was to find a flat parcel on which to build a country cottage complete with chickens and a vast garden. When she and her husband found the plot of land on the McKenzie River, however, their architect Nir Pearlson proposed a modern architectural design filled with concrete, exposed beams, and lots of glass. The couple agreed.

"Modern" refers to a style of architecture and furniture design that evolved from Germany prior to WWII and into American culture post WWII, peaking in the 1950s. The modern movement abandoned the traditional ideals of ornamentation in decor to create a new aesthetic based on simple form and function. Modern design was characterized by the use of natural materials such as tubular steel, molded plywood, leather, teak wood, animal hide, aluminum, and linen as well as clear and white plastics. Elements in modern design included long and low horizontal lines, cantilevering, splayed legs, chrome-plating, exposed elements, but always unembellished. Neutral tones were preferred with occasional pops of color, usually primary.

"Contemporary furniture" refers to design that is current, using the latest processes, color trends, and styles. Contemporary design topped the scene in the 1970s and was based on utilizing...

As I fell asleep thinking about a meeting I had planned the next day with a hotel manager, I decided it would be good to go through some of the design magazines (Metropolitan Home, Interior Design, and Dwell) that I have laying around the house to pull out some examples of the designers MODERN carries or represents in our store.
